Ancient Petrogylphs, a Ghost Tour, and a Haunted Hotel Room
We got up, made coffee, and went for breakfast at the Miner's Grubstake. They will close tomorrow afternoon for two weeks. We will be gone before they reopen. We have enjoyed the food and, especially, the people here.
We drove on to Legend Rock Petroglyph Site, a little over three hours away. The site has nearly 300 individual petroglyphs, which mix animal and human forms with geometric symbols. We visited the site a few years ago and have wanted to return. The petroglyphs cover a south-facing rock wall that is about 400 ft long. You can pretty close to the images, so it is easy to photograph the panels.
On the way up to Legend Rock we saw about 58 pronghorn antelope. Coming into the site, we saw a covey of chukar, 19 pronghorn antelope, and several prairie dogs feeding on vegetation along the road.
Coming out of Legend Rock, we saw 19 pronghorn antelope, which included the 12 we saw earlier.
Onwards to Cody. Along the way we say some 65 pronghorn antelope and then about 80 in a pasture just north of Meeteetse. We also saw six mule deer.
We arrived at Cody about 2:30 and went to the Buffalo Bill's Irma Hotel. We went into the saloon for a beer while we waited for the 3:00 check in time.
Our room, 37, named for Caroline Lockhart, a novelist who published the local newspaper for several years, is reportedly haunted. The toilet is reported to flush in the night and the sink faucets turn on by themselves. I can't speak to the toilet report, but I can see how the faucets come by their reputation. Use the faucet, turn it off, and it still runs slowly. You have to give it a good hard turn. That said, we did find the faucet running in the mornings. Who knows?
After getting into the room, we put our things away, showered, relaxed a bit, then went down into the hotel restaurant for dinner.
A little after 7:00, we walked down to the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, where we were to meet a tour group for a US Ghost Adventures tour that started at 8:00 PM. I was surprised that there others on the tour- four of us altogether. The basic tour lasted about an hour. We also booked the extended tour, which lasted at least another 30 minutes.
The guide was a local college student. She presented the material very well- she is evidently given a script to follow- and I enjoyed talking with her as we walked along. I have mixed feelings about the tour. It was ok, the guide was good, but a few of the stories were simply fabricated. Yeah, I know this is not a history class, but there are enough stories and oddities that one can tell the stories correctly and still entertain/shock the guests. I spent two weeks in Cody last night researching its dark side, so ....
Anyway, we finished the tour and headed back to the hotel. I thought I might have a drink before bed. We walked into the saloon at the Irma. It is small and had a band playing and, of course, their amplifiers were turned way up. Up to the room we went.
