No School Tour for Me!

Exchange Saloon Card Room, South Pass City State Historic Site, Wyoming

The Exchange Saloon Card Room on a cool, but clear day.

It was a bit chilly this morning. Connie got up and mixed a sourdough starter for English muffins and ran the sink a bit, but soon the water line (hose) coming into the trailer started to slush up. We ran the sink for a bit and resolved that. A morning low of 30F at the trailer. Later in the day, the temperature got up to about 60, so it was a pleasant day.

We had a small group on site today- about 20 students of various ages. Jesse and Connie walked them through town and then up to the English Tunnel and the Carissa Mine and Mill. This is the last tunnel tour of the year.

I spent the day working in the archives. I enjoy the work, but it seems so odd to be indoors all day- I do not interact with visitors and don't have a sense of whether the site is busy or slow- I feel a bit disconnected. Oh, well.

Glen, who often leads the English Tunnel tours, stopped by around 11:00 with Joe, a friend of his. They had been off in the Red Desert checking Glen's trail cameras. Glen has mentioned Joe a number of times before- they want to start a podcast and I've been trying to help Glen get equipment set up, etc. We talked for a bit. They wanted to go up to the Grubstake for lunch, so I traveled along. Alas, the Grubstake was closed. They are scaling back their day time hours as we head into fall and winter. So, back to South Pass City and the archives for me.

The day was productive and I walked to the trailer at 4:00. Connie and I relaxed a bit and then went to the Miner's Grubstake for Taco Thursday. We went a bit early and returned a little sooner that I would have preferred, but Connie had a started for English muffins going and needed to get back to shape them, let them raise, and the bake them. This took a lot of her evening. I read a bit and developed a couple of ghost stories for the "Halloween" event on Saturday of next week.

Leaving the Grubstake early did have one advantage, coming back into South Pass City, we saw a nice pair of mule deer right along the road. The doe ran off, but the buck let us get a couple of photos.
