Old-timey Stylish Shades and High-end Watches

Invoice for smoked lenses. Smith Sherlock Company Store, South Pass City State Historic Site, Wyoming.

Invoice for smoked lenses. Now, I like smoked salmon, but... Actually, these are the early 1900's version of sunglasses.

I woke up early today and after breakfast was a bit restless so I went down to the shop and loaded sarsaparilla into the Ranger and brought it out of the shop. Ha! I beat the Gator today. He was on the prowl, though, so I picked him up and off we went to the Miner’s Exchange Saloon.

Afterwards, we sat outside and waited for the staff meeting to begin. The meeting came and went. The most notable items were the time of Jan’s talk tomorrow- she has been compiling stories about South Pass City area murders and strange deaths. Also, Joe distributed schedules for after Labor Day, when most of us will shift from working weekends, to working T-W-Th,

Then, into the archives for a few hours. I continued digitizing invoices for the Smith Sherlock Company Store and found a couple of interesting ones for 1900’s “sunglasses,” you have to be stylish living in the big city, and one for “gold-filled watch.” More gold “plated” than “filled.” It definitely wasn’t the working man’s watch.

Invoice for a "gold-plated" watch. The list price was $80.00, but for some reason only $40.00 is due. Perhaps a discount or credit against a returned item? But assuming the watch was $40.00, that is about $1400.00 in 2026 funds. Pricey.

At noon, I opened the Miner’s Exchange Saloon. Today I had only 16 visitors, including two who walked right through without work or breaking stride- in a hurry to get to the jail, I guess. And I had one dog. Nothing after 2:00. Time to write, research, and ponder the universe.

I closed the saloon up at 4:00, having sold six bottles of sarsaparilla. I had set out my brochure and one person looked at it and got excited about a couple of points.

I grilled a steak and made a salad for dinner. And then relax and wine. I have been working, secretly, on an anthology, Ghosts of South Pass City - I do not like to "advertise," but forthcoming. So there!

Really, I totally support the site, but,,
