A Saturday in the Smith Sherlock Company Store
I was cool this morning. Our temperature gauge recorded 55 F for the morning low. It was just into the 60s when I walked down to the shop to meet up with Gator for our sarsaparilla run. The ride over and back from the Miner’s Exchange Saloon was beautiful!
After that, four hours in the archives digitizing more invoices. Like most data collection, it can be a bit tedious, but the payoff will come once I get the invoices into a spreadsheet.
At noon, I left to open the Smith Sherlock Company Store. The first half hour was quiet, but then there was a pretty steady flow of people throughout the afternoon, until about 3:30.
I had, I think 40 people and one dog come through today, but I had a couple of talkers. One was fellow about my age, he came in with a group and shared his thoughts and experiences with them. After they moved on to the next building, he remained and had a lifetime of stories he wanted to share with me. Later, a woman traveling alone discovered that she had a captive audience. Ok, both ears have been bent They were pleasant enough, but…
A bit later, a group of seven, four adults and three teenage girls, from France came in. One of the adults knew enough English that I could answer a few questions, but we all were able to point and make faces enough to communicate. It was kind of fun.
I closed the store at 4:00 and when home to make a coleslaw and fajitas for dinner. After dinner, we cleaned up and headed over to the Rock Shop Inn. We sat outside to catch a breeze, read, and had a glass of wine. We saw two pronghorn antelope on the way to the Rock Shop and four on the way back.
Back home, we read a bit and then hit the sack.
