Another hot Day in South Pass City

 The high yesterday was 92, we only made it to 90 today. Connie and I both had computer work, reading, etc., to catch up on and did so. The AC came on early.

About 1:00, I decided to run into Lander for a break. I bought a few items (we are out of eggs and butter) and returned to SPC. 

I saw two pronghorn antelope on the way out, but none on the way back in. Too hot for wildlife, evidently.

Reading and writing through the afternoon. I an caught up on one project! 

Connie has been shelling pecans, I think to make pecan pies for one of the upcoming staff meetings.There is a tradition here of having dessert at the morning staff meeting and sugar in the morning just does not set well with me, so...

Speaking of sugar, Connie added sugar water to the hummingbird feeders today, so they are still hitting it. I watched the feeder briefly this evening and saw activity. I was afraid they had all migrated on though the other day, though that time likely is near.

After dinner, I did a bit of meal prep for tomorrow's breakfast so we can get an early start on fishing.

 Connie is off on a walk, so I have been reading, relaxing and thinking. This gave me an opportunity to reflect on my time here so far and how I might press on in the next few months, particularly with these observations.

Arrival and Week 1

I arrived in South Pass City mid-morning on Thursday May 21 after a 1020 mile, four-day drive. I could have made it in three days, but decided to spend the night in Lander to fuel up, buy a few groceries, and relax. I checked in at the office, no one was there, but ran into Ashley, a site employee and caught up for a few minutes. Wonderful spring weather in South Pass City. As I was backing up the trailer, getting in and out of the truck to check placement in my camping pad, checking level, etc., it began to sleet, then snow. The temperature was in the 30s and the wind was blowing pretty hard. I got some assistance with backing up from Jesse, one of the seasonal employees, and Curtis, a site employee. This save a number of extra in and outs from the truck. I unhitched the trailer, hooked up the water hose, power, and sewer line and hunkered down in the trailer and set up the inside from travel mode. A Day of Routine Household Activities

  Our Clamshell shelter on the bank of Willow Creek It started off cool today, the morning low was 32, but it warmed up nicely. I did a little computer work this morning and then we took advantage of the nice weather to drag the last of our stuff out of the truck and finish setting up "camp." First, I set up our propane (Coleman Roadtrip) grill. Next, Connie and I set up our Quickset Clamshell shelter for use as a workout area. I secured the shelter with ground anchors. We'll see how it stands up to Wyoming winds. Finally, we set up a folding table that we place near our outdoor shower. We use this table and the shower spigot to wash dishes, prepare food, and clean fish. After spending $250 on fishing licenses, I hope there is a fair bit of fish cleaning this summer. We have access to a nearby garage that is owned by SPC, so we stowed a few items there, including our dumbbells. A School Tour of the English Tunnel and The Carissa Mine and Mill

   We had a short staff meeting this morning, mostly routine stuff: scheduling, upcoming events, review of a few site policies, etc. We also learned that one of the full-time staff had been ill following a tick bite- Rocky Mountain spotted fever.  After the meeting, we busied ourselves with various activities until a little after 9:30 when students from a summer school class from Riverton arrived to tour the English Tunnel (entrance shown above) and the Carissa.These tours are two of the big attractions at SPC. Before leaving for the tour, there was a lot of bug spraying going on! Joe led the two tours, The hike to the tunnel is about a mile long and climbs 100 ft or so.  Once we got to the tunnel, Joe discussed its history and we entered. The tunnel goes back about 150 ft and then branches to the left and right, with both leads (drifts) going about 75 ft. Its a neat place, but I have to stoop really low to avoid hitting my head- have done that and don't recommend it...
