A Movie in the old Sweetwater County Jail

Ha! I got to the shop before Gator this morning. He was sitting in front of the Dance Hall basking and wandered over when he saw me. We loaded up the sarsaparilla and dropped them off in the Miner’s Exchange Saloon. I worked in the archives, indexing records, and then opened the Saloon at noon.

Early on I had several visitors and then it slowed down. A peaceful day, but I really didn’t have much of a chance to do any reading or writing until 2:00 or so. Then, I was able to do a bit of writing.

Twenty-six people and three dogs came through the saloon. Shortly after I opened, a family of four came by. Walked up to the door and walked off. One member of the group stopped just long enough to ask what type of animal (mule deer) was mounted on the wall. I had three other groups of two, two, and four just walk though without stopping or asking anything. From comments made by several visitors, even those who looked around a bit, they were interested in seeing the jail, so I guess the saloon is just in the way. I did get into a few good conversations today with a few groups, which is both fun and really makes the day go by fast. One couple walked in with a small dog that was dragging its tongue on the ground. I was drinking a bottle of water and poured some in a plastic cup. That went faster than a cold beer.

Connie came by at 4:00 and I closed the saloon. I sold nine sold bottles of sarsaparilla. We got several donations today, including three five-dollar bills, which was unusually good for such a slow day.

We put the leftover sarsaparilla way and headed to the archives where I was going to charge our projector to watch a movie in the jail for this evening. Connie and I then headed home for dinner. I fired up the smoker so that we could bake a strawberry cobbler for the movie- we had some frozen strawberries and a limited pantry and this is what ChatGPT suggested. It turned out great.

Jan, Fran and Susan, and Ashley joined us for the movie. We watched Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid- local lore has it that Butch occasionally passed through South Pass City. He lived in Rock Springs, where he supposedly got the nickname Butch, and was arrested in Lander. South Pass City was on the road between these two towns so it is pretty likely that he did, in fact, pass through at times.

After the movie, we put things away, went home, and went to bed.
