A Day in the Smith Sherlock Company Store
Gator and I loaded up Sarsaparilla for the Miners Exchange Saloon. I then worked in the archives until noon. I am beginning to photograph and digitize invoices from the Smith Sherlock Company Store. The invoices run from the early 1900s until sometime in the 1920s. There are gaps, but these should allow an interesting look into the seasonal ebb and flow of life in SPC.
From noon to 4:00 I manned the Smith Sherlock Company Store. The day started off slow, but then two groups came in back-to-back, about 18 people between them. Another 32 visitors came in throughout the day for a 50-person, one-dog day. One of the most interesting conversations of the day was with a young German couple that came though. We discussed the differences in distance between cities in Germany (very close) versus the US (quite large, especially in western US). Just before they left, I mentioned that the store had German food. They were curious. I showed them the can for Seneca sauerkraut. They were not impressed. Oh, well, the Smith Sherlock Company Store was out in the middle of nowhere and you do what you can,
Dinner and a bit of reading and writing in the evening.
