Let the Volunteering Begjn!

Today, Friday, was my first official day, I spend the morning, 8-12, in the site archives, re familiarizing myself location and organization of digital materials, and researching Dr. Walter Lovejoy for the Lovejoy Diaries project I am working on.

At noon, I opened the Smith Sherlock Company Store and greeted visitors, discussed the store and its history, and answered questions. Connie spent part of the day with me to learn the history of the store and how to man it.

The store is a lot of fun. There are a number of really interesting artifacts and display items that come with interesting stories, which I enjoy talking about. I closed the store at 4 PM. We had 18 people stop by the store while it was open. Not many, but it is still early in the season and greater numbers of visitors are expected starting next week when tours of the mine/mill and English tunnel begin.

The most interesting visitors of the day were a group of four: two from Riverton and the other two from a small town in north central Germany. The German couple were, visiting the daughter or son of the other couple, who brought them to SPC for a day trip. The husband of the couple spoke no English and his wife spoke about as much English as I speak German. She was using a Google translate app to communicate and it seemed to work well for them.

All in all, a light first day. After dinner, we visited the Rock Shop Inn, which is only 4-5 miles away. Connie hit the diet Pepsi pretty hard and I had a couple of glass of Cabernet-Sauvignon. While we were there, someone was playing the piano upstairs. The style sound like that of John Mionczynski, a really talented saloon-type piano player. Yep, it was him. I had a short visit with the owner, Anthony and caught up a bit. Later, Laura and Carl, who we met a couple of years ago and who have a cabin in South Pass City, came in and we visited a while. Connie and I returned hone (to the trailer), did a little computer work, and called it a day.
